Probably the most comprehensive and common sense book on autism I have read out of about 8 books. I actually listened to the book on audible, mostly while driving or doing housework and was not bored at all. Even parts that didn't relate to my child (like info on non verbal autism) were interesting. I purchased the actual book because I felt it would be easier to reference information from the book rather than the audible version saved to my icloud. Promotes comprehensive approaches to assisting people in the spectrum from diet, to medication (extremely helpful info on meds, my child is currently not medicated but should the need arise I feel far more prepared to disc uss options with a doctor having read this book) to sensory aids like tinted lenses and just good old fashioned parenting, consistently expecting polite behavior with consistent, appropriate consequences. Temple shares her own experiences as an autistic as well as experiences gathered from the masses of people on the spectrum that she has met and collaborated with.

As a mom who recently found out her son is mildly autistic this book was a blessing! Temple helped me see how my 10 year old sees the world. I really am understanding more now and its empowered me to be a better mom! He is slowly showing me this beautiful part of him that I never knew. He is not having his episodes as frequently with the help of this book and a low dose medication. I always felt something was beautifully different but I could not have imagined how seeing into how he views be such a inspiring ride! Thank you Temple for making it so much more clearer and giving me so much insight into my sweet boy! Whether you have been diagnosed years ago or just now this book will give you another way to look at your child that to me is breath taking!

Dr. Temple Grandin is my hero! Her book has provided so much insight for me with my own son that is an Aspie. Her "tell it like it is" writing style leaves no questions unanswered for those of us who are affected by autism. The fact that she is also an autistic individual shows how there are ways of becoming outstanding individuals even with autism. She addresses everything from education to medication. I personally feel that ALL EDUCATORS should read this book to realize that even though Aspie's are high functioning, they do have issues that regular wired individuals can not understand. I say that from the stand point that the free public education system seems have no clue what autism is; which is shown from the tests they use to evaulate for autism.**I hope that I have the opportunity to see Dr. Grandin speak. She has changed my relationship with my son forever! I was actually able to "feel" the things that he feels every day. Thank you!

It helped me to see the way I see too! HELPS me have hope and know not to give up only because I have autism does not mean I not a people worth People to be friends with or hear ! Also, people with Autism as Smart and can do thing just like an other person out there!

As a collection of articles, sorted by theme, I found it very helpful. It introduces the reader to ideas and concepts in bite sized chunks, allowing them to be easily digested. The book would be an excellent purchase for someone who was trying to familiarize themselves with Autism overall, as it clarifies things frequently due to the format of each article have been published separately when they were first published. Each article individually has citations as applicable, and Dr. Grandin is clear on which topics represent her own opinion or anecdotes relayed to her...and which information comes from the citations. This makes the text strong as a resource for more academic research, should that be needed. My only criticism is that the price of this, as an e-book, is a smidgen high for material that was formerly printed in magazines. While the book does save the reader from having to hunt down the original sources, the revised/updated articles still don't quite feel reasonable in price. I honestly feel this should be a few bucks cheaper. A potential issue for some readers is that they may find Dr. Grandin's writing a little overly repetitive...as each of these articles needed to establish points individually that the book doesn't need to reiterate quite so frequently. I don't consider that an issue however, as some will benefit from the repetition either due to neurological issues and/or a lack of familiarity with the material. Just be prepared to deal with a little bit of extra text if you are a quick learner; the quality of the content is worth it.On that note, the overall quality is too high and too solid for me to quibble over a few dollars for any meaningful length of time. Excellent piece of information from one of the foremost authorities on the topic. Highly recommended.

This is a great book for anyone to read especially parents and grandparents of a child with autism. My grandchild has autism and now I understand why he does certain things and what he is thinking and how much he hears and understands what people are saying, even though you might think he is just sitting there being alone. Autistic children are really smart, they just need a chance to show you. Listen to them, understand them and help them in any way you can. Let them know you are there for them!
