Here is the remarkable story of how medieval Arab scholars made dazzling advances in science and philosophy, and of the itinerant Europeans who brought this knowledge back to the West. For centuries following the fall of Rome, Western Europe was a benighted backwater, a world of subsistence farming, minimal literacy, and violent conflict. Meanwhile, Arab culture was thriving, dazzling those Europeans fortunate enough to catch even a glimpse of the scientific advances coming from Baghdad, Antioch, or the cities of Persia, Central Asia, and Muslim Spain. There, philosophers, mathematicians, and astronomers were steadily advancing the frontiers of knowledge and revitalizing the works of Plato and Aristotle.
In the royal library of Baghdad, known as the House of Wisdom, an army of scholars worked at the behest of the Abbasid caliphs. At a time when the best book collections in Europe held several dozen volumes, the House of Wisdom boasted as many as 400,000. Even while their countrymen waged bloody Crusades against Muslims, a handful of intrepid Christian scholars, thirsty for knowledge, traveled to Arab lands and returned with priceless jewels of science, medicine, and philosophy that laid the foundation for the Renaissance.
In this brilliant, evocative book, Lyons shows just how much Western culture owes to the glories of medieval Arab civilization, and reveals the untold story of how Europe drank from the well of Muslim learning.

Philosophy and theology. The history of science. Contributions of the great minds to human progress. And finally, the strong contributions from Arab nations. If any of these topics interest you – and they certainly should – you will share my fascination for The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization by Jonathan Lyons.Even those with a foundation of knowledge in these topics will find themselves surprised at many points.• How did religion drive scientific exploration and discovery? Each religion had designated times for prayer. Determining those times meant learning about the stars and developing tools for observation. When these did not work, there was a lesson about latitude.• What drove the religious leaders of this era? Riches and land rivaled the quest for conversion of new minds.• Theology dominated mainstream thought in the time from 600 AD or so. 1000 years later, it had dramatically changed. While theology remained important, most finally realized that the universe did not revolve around the earth.• The ideas of early philosophers and scholars spread slowly, painfully slowly. Imagine that everything had to be copied or translated on scrolls. The cost, the slippage in meaning, and delays were all significant. In the world of the tweet, we can hardly imagine this. That is just a sampling. This is a well-researched, scholarly work. While the author has a conclusion, he adduces powerful evidence in support. It is a viewpoint that is valuable in current times. We would all benefit from less suspicion and more understanding of the intellectual contributions from Arab nations. And just in case I have made it all seem too scholarly and heavy, the author includes plenty of color about the crusades, sieges, the religious leaders, and the traveling scholars.(I purchased both the Audible version and the Kindle book. For my personal reading, this was a good choice. My non-business reading is mostly from Audible. In this case, the Kindle version helped with names, references, and timelines).
The house of wisdom was an amazing book that made me see the Islam world differently. They give a different perspective to the crusades in which they do not highlight the violence but rather the achievements of the Islamic world at that time period. This book made me see the many contributions that the muslims made to today's society. My view of knowledge is almost the same as the one they have and that made me get very interested in the book. It is amazing in how this book isn't well known for people because it gives a lot of valuable information about the crusades and no just the things we were told but rather advances that were occurring at the same time but that became invisible in history.
This book was easy to read as an introduction to the history of thought from Islam. Key thinkers were identified and reinforced by repeated refer to their influence. Escape from the truly Dark Ages came from the Arabs. I would like to have read more about what happened to cause Islam to abandon its lead in scientific thought. But, that is another book.
This book was extremely helpful is grasping a better understanding of how the Islamic world came to be. The book offered many detailed examples of their advancements and their way of thinking which was great because the reader got a sense of their everyday life as well and what they valued most in their society which was knowledge and education. The language was a bit difficult to understand but overall, very informative and interesting!
This book was assigned to me for my college Western Tradition course as an outside source of information. Very easy read, though monotonous and ongoing at some parts, and full of enlightening historical context. Changes the perception of the Arab contribution to modern society in a short read. Would suggest to anyone studying the topics relating to the Arabs influence on the Western Hemisphere.
This book points out so many errors in my education in the 50’s and 60’s and since. We were taught that Columbus sailed the ocean blue not knowing if the earth was flat. Really? I read archeological magazines which talk about the astrolabe as something not understood. Are we still reluctant to learn stuff from other cultures?
Very nice journey through a historical period that somehow seems to be missing from many historical references, books and periodicals
This a great book. It gives readers a sense of complementarity between Muslims, Christians, Jews, and people of other faiths and civilizations. It shows how the Western world owe Muslims, whom have been perceived as the enemy and antithesis of Western values and institutions.
