Chase Your Shadow: The Trials of Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius was eleven months old when he had both legs amputated below the knee, due to congenital fibular disease. Despite this severe disability, Pistorious grew up to be an extraordinary athlete, inspirational role model, and global symbol of resilience. In 2012 he became the first amputee runner in history to compete in the Olympics and was hailed as a hero not only in his native South Africa but around the world.

Everything changed for Pistorius in the early morning hours of February 14, 2013, Valentine's Day, when he shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, through a closed bathroom door, allegedly because he mistook her for an intruder intent on doing him harm. He was arrested and charged with premeditated murder, and overnight, the public's view of Pistorius turned on its head.

Not since the O. J. Simpson case has a courtroom drama riveted global attention on one man's fate. Acclaimed journalist John Carlin's vivid firsthand account of Pistorius' seven-month murder trial, broadcast worldwide from Johannesburg, details the wrenching emotional breakdowns and merciless interrogation of the accused on and off the stand, the fraught relationship between the Pistorius and Steenkamp families, and the highly controversial verdict of culpable homicide, for which Pistorius received a five-year sentence.

But Chase Your Shadow is far more than just a sensational crime story, as Carlin shows through meticulous reporting and extensive access to Pistorius and his family and friends. This courtroom confrontation between a white, privileged, 27-year-old male athlete on trial for murder and the black female judge who alone would decide his fate held in a democratic country trying to exorcise its history of racial hatred and endemic violence against women - exposes the complex social and political realities of post-Apartheid South Africa.

John Carlin's 'Chase Your Shadow' is a well-researched account of the rise and fall of Oscar Pistorius, South Africa's Blade Runner. I read Carlin's account for two reasons: first and foremost because I loved his previous work, "Playing the Enemy" (later turned into the movie 'Invictus'); and, second, because I'm a lifelong track nut who was smitten by Pistorius' triumphs...and subsequently bewildered by the shocking turn of events. Those of you looking for clear-cut proof as to Pistorius' guilt or innocence won't find it in these pages. Carlin's book is balanced...almost earnestly so. It has all the familiar touchstones of the story, including: Pistorius' lifelong will to achieve despite the massive blow dealt to him at birth; the importance of his late mother on his character and the effect of her absence; his relentless obsession to get better at running; the humble roots of the Steenkamp family and their daughter, Reeva; the killing of Reeva Steenkamp; the tick-tock of the trial; and the important roles of the chief prosecutor, Gerrie Nel, Pistorius' attorney Barry Roux and Judge Thokozile Masipa. One drawback: the book ends very quickly. I would like to know more about Pistorius post-trial. 'Chase Your Shadow' doesn't even make it to the prisoner's first day behind bars. It ends almost abruptly as the trial concludes. This is no small matter: Carlin calls his book "The Trials of Oscar Pistorius." The plural is there for a reason: there's the trial of his life, to overcome his obstacles; then, there's the trial -- the actual one; and, lastly, there's the trial of public opinion...the one he'll never escape. That's where the reader is given a bit of short shrift with the "see ya" ending. I wanted to know more. The real hero here is Judge Masipa. As Carlin writes, "[She] might have made enemies outside the courtroom, but among those who had followed the trial from start to finish the consensus was that she had acquitted herself with elegance, dignity and due gravity."

'Chase your Shadow: The Trials of Oscar Pistorius' is not only an excellent account of the trial itself but also of contemporary South Africa. The book reads very well and has led to rumblings that it will be adapted into a movie (John Carlin's book, 'Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation' was later turned into the movie 'Invictus'). I personally enjoyed this novel having been to South Africa and the cities of Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Port Elizabeth in particular (These cities feature prominently in the book) as well as having done academic work on the country. The insight into Pistorius's life prior to the shooting as well as the background of other key figures was very effective and intriguing. I would highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading more John Carlin books in the future.

A very well written account of this crime. The author seems slightly partial to Oscar's version of things, but does explore things fairly. The backstory information is excellent, and the legal structure of the findings is clearly presented.A very nice read.

Brilliantly written , a page Turner. Enjoyed reading this unbiased Oscar Pistorius story . I'm sure it's the best "version" of how it really was,and is for Oscar. Strongly recommended.

Not only the trial, but also is childhood and raise to fame are well described by the author. An unbiased account of what happened after the cruel shooting of Reeva.

I thought it was well written and worth the read.

A very balanced perspective on this very sad story!

It is good to know the full story....
